Rivers Government Vows to Jail Keke Operators

Operators of the ubiquitous commercial motorcycle taxis popularly known as Okada, and those of the tricycle known as Keke Napep within the Greater Port Harcourt City, a mega-city project of the Chibuike Amaechi administration, now risk   being thrown into jail by the Rivers State Government.

Government in a latest move aimed at bringing sanity on the roads and streets of the capital city, has restricted their operation to the rural areas.

The state government has accordingly directed the Ministry of Transport to implement the law banning the use of motorcycle popularly and tricycle in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and its environs

It was gathered that the directive to enforce the ban was a resolution reached at the first Inter-Governmental meeting of the state under Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s second tenure in office.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, said the decision followed cases of some individuals operating bikes that have been banned in the state.

She explained that the forum, which was presided over by the governor of the state, consequently ordered the Ministry of Transport to strictly enforce the ban immediately in performance of its duties.

The commissioner said the state government appreciates the transport challenges prevalent in the state but emphasized that the security and health challenges posed by the operations of these mode of transportation are dangerously more.

Mrs Semenitari therefore appealed to the operators of motor bikes in the state to restrict themselves to the rural communities or risk impoundment and prosecution.
