Commission plans carnival in Abuja for World Literacy Day

The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, plans to mark this year’s World Literacy Day which comes up on September 8, with a remarkable difference
To this end, the commission, it was gathered  plans are in top  gear to make the carnival within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as part of its awareness creation moves for the event which is celebrated the world over.

Other activities that will feature that day in Abuja and 36 states in the country, include discussion programmes on radio and television stations across the country, visits to Adult Literacy centres, among others.

Modalities for a successful organization of this year’s event were discussed at a stakeholders’ meeting which took place at the Sharon ultimate Hotel, Area 3, Garki, Abuja, last Thursday.
Addressing participants at the meeting who were drawn from the Ministry of Education, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the media, NATCOM/UNESCO, Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Civil Defence, etc., Mr. Ajiboso who stood in for the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Alhaji Yusuf Paiko, described the gathering as a family meeting, stating that it was meant to share ideas.
“I want us to share ideas, opinions and suggestions on how we can have a successful Literacy Day celebration this year,” he said.

He added that the basic thing is to create awareness because most of our people don’t even know the importance of literacy or education.”
The meeting reviewed the celebration of the event in 2010, which was hosted by Cross River State.
Meanwhile, this year’s World Literacy Day celebration comes up in Zamfara State, after the global event which is September 8.
